Facts About Hunger Handout

Celebrate PA Week by Fighting Hunger in Your Community

In recognition of PA Week, October 6-12, 2009, the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants, will be focusing on hunger and nutrition. Our other effort for that week is a food shelf drive. We are asking each PA in Minnesota to gather food to be delivered to your local food shelf at the end of PA Week. Another option is to contribute to our campaign to collect dollars for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

The time frame will be for two weeks, beginning October 5th and going until October 19th.

Second Harvest

Second Harvest Heartland is the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger-relief organization, striving to end hunger through community partnerships. We form the backbone of organizations working together to efficiently alleviate hunger in 59 counties throughout Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. Second Harvest Heartland operates the fifth largest food bank in the United States, helping feed 77% of the hungry in our service area.

We challenge you to be the champion of this effort in you workplace and community. A champion is one who makes it happen. Let your co-workers know. See if your workplace will let you e-mail all employees to contribute, and put out collection boxes. You would be the person who helps get the food to the local food shelf. Remember to have them weigh it and give you a slip that confirms your donation. If you cannot be a champion, we ask that you contribute what you can.

At the end of the week, we will ask each region leader to let us know how many pounds of food were delivered. Based on the population in the region, we will have a friendly competition to see which region in Minnesota had the largest food drive. In the spirit of fun, and especially in the spirit of battling hunger, we ask you to join in. The regions will be divided into Northern Minnesota, Central Minnesota, Metro area, and Southern Minnesota.
